>> your realtime captioner: linda marie macdonald good afternoon, everybody. i'm frank mallicoat. >> i'm michelle griego. we're learning new details in a developing story in san francisco. a round of bullets fired at police during a chase that ended with a violent crash in the western addition. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran is in san francisco. cate, the suspect driver apparently is still on the loose. >> reporter: our sources say

the suspected driver was an -- or is an oakland rapper with gang ties. that's according to alameda county court paperwork that our source saw in the car. but pd wouldn't confirm it. they say the investigation is still ongoing. it started as a minor traffic violation and ended in a dramatic collision. >> police are doing their job pulling this person over. the suspect chose to fire at officers and the suspect chose to flee from the scene and create this -- this mess. >> reporter: at 2 a.m., san francisco police department tried to pull over a cadillac for a broken license plate but officers got more than they bargained for. >> the vehicle was pulling over at the area of he feel list and laguna -- of ellis and laguna street. at that time shots were fired from the vehicle and the vehicle fled southbound on laguna. >> reporter: by the time officers caught up with the car it had t-boned into a taxicab a few blocks away. the two male suspects tried to run away but pd caught up with the passenger. >> this shows you how quickly

and dangerous police work can turn in the blink of an eye. we're glad to have the passenger off the streets but now we are hoping to capture the driver. >> reporter: there were hundreds of cds on the ground tying back to one rapper. sfpd is looking into the possibility but these cases take time. >> we want to collect as much evidence as possible and take our time with the investigation so we can collect as much information as possible to build a strong case. >> reporter: no officers were injured in this incident. the taxi driver did sustain nonlife-threatening injuries. police are asking the public to call their tip line if they have any information on this case. live in san francisco, back to you. people living in the western addition are saying again? this is the second police chase to end in a violent crash here in the past three weeks. in late september, police pursued flee robbers on a chase that began in pacific heights after the suspects allegedly

swiped an ipad at a cafe and then fled in a getaway car. the high-speed chase ended with the suspects plowing into several cars including one of our news vans at the intersection of hayes and buchanan. san jose police department has arrested one of their own. officer jeffrey enslen is suspected of committing grand theft as a result of time sheet fraud. the department's criminal investigation detail caught on the discrepancy after a nine- month investigation. he is on paid administrative leave from the department while being booked at the santa clara county jail. >> anytime you have an officer booked for felony crime it's very disappointing to the rank- and-file because we count on one another not only to do a good job but to abide, you know, by the penal code, vehicle code, do the right things for the right reasons. >> prior to this incident officer enslen had served the san jose police department for 15 years. this case is in the hands of the district attorney now and will now work its way through the court system.

oakland port commissioners have voted to suspected executive director omar benjamin this after an investigation into executive spending. maritime director james kwon allegedly sought thousands of dollars in reimbursements for expenses he used in strip clubs. it makes no mention of kwon, currently in china on a businessry. the investigation reveals kwon billed for personal expenses in thousands of dollars. the stock is way down today. the dow is down 220 points. this is a very sour end to an otherwise strong week of trading. not too much has changed but california's unemployment rate is still moving in the right direction. it's getting better. the state jobless rate went down from 10.6 to 10.2%. job growth in education,

finance and hospitality sectors are driving the rate. 11 straight days of gasoline prices going down. the travel season is winding up and price tips are giving bay area drives a little relief. according to the daily fuel gauge report san francisco still has the highest local average at 4.60 the second highest in the state, oakland at 4.51 and san jose at 4.50. i-80 corridor in the east bay can be a traffic nightmare. cbs 5 reporter anne makovec is live with the new project that uses cutting edge technology now and is supposed to hopefully ease that traffic problem. anne. >> reporter: yeah, you can see traffic moving slowly right now on i-80 and a lot of it due to here is volume. this new system uses tools we have seen before traffic sensors an metering lights but they will be used in an

integrated system being called the first of its kind in the bay area. >> it's one of the most congested corridors in the bay area. >> reporter: through the corridor mobility project, construction begins today on a system of traffic sensors, cameras, electronic signage and detours on side streets to help ease gridlock on 20 miles of i- 80 between the bay and carquinez bridges. >> the entire system will be interconnected so that information will flow to the drivers upstream if there's incident and ask them to slow down so we can make sure that the flow continues through the freeway instead of coming to a standstill. >> reporter: the new system will be in place in two years costing $80 million paid for through voter-approved bonds built by a coalition of transportation agencies in alameda and contra costa county. >> it is a good example of cooperation between the cities

and the counties between the multitude of jurisdictions. we're all working together for the same end. >> reporter: now, some of these agencies say a similar traffic system is in place now on washington state and that it's eased congestion by 50%. we could see road closures in association with this project over the next few years. caltrans will let us know in advance. anne makovec, cbs 5. drives will have to find another way across the bay -- drives will have to find another way across the bay because san mateo bridge closes tonight starting friday at 10 p.m. and ending 5 a.m. on monday. caltrans is replacing sections of the bridge after temporarily fixing a crack found two years ago. alternative routes, you may try the dumbarton bridge, bay bridge and highway 237. giants fans have been chanting mvp for months. while that title is still not settled buster posey can claim another honor. he is officially the comeback player of the year in the

national league. no surprise there. he hit .336 with 24 homers, 103 rbis, 39 doubles and 78 runs for the n.l. west champion giants. this after that horrifying collision and broken leg at home plate last year ending his season. posey is also considered a front-runner for the nl mvp to be announced next month. had he hits one into right... back at the wall... >> take a look at that. speaking of comebacks. san francisco is going to need another one. st. louis whipped the giants last night to take a three to one lead in the national league championship series but tonight it's do or die with barry zito on the mound. first pitch just after 5:00. >> we believe in mr. zito. good luck. a night for laughs behind them back to work for barack obama and mitt romney. just how quickly the two men went from trading jokes to trading barbs. >> and out of a coma back on her feet.

in a hospital in a foreign country. >> one of the first things she asked what country is she in. >> reporter: she has some damage in her brain and she was shot from above at point-blank range. >> she was struck above the back of the left eye and the bullet went down through the side of her jaw damaging the skull. >> reporter: doctors say it will be at least a couple of weeks before they can start rebuilding malala's skull. first they have to deal with the infection from the bullet that came within inches of killing her. a group of pakistani women lit candles in birmingham to support malala and women's rights. >> those like malala live in fear every single day, afraid of the taliban. >> reporter: taliban fighters say they tried to murder malala because she spoke out against them. the young activist won awards for her bravery as she defied the terror group's ban on education for girls. doctors say she knows about the

worldwide attention she is getting and is grateful for all the support. charlie d'agata, cbs news, birmingham, england. george zimmerman's lawyers are in a florida court today trying to subpoena trayvon martin's school and social media records. the martin family is firing back saying they are not relevant. but they are asking for the suspect's medical records to be allowed in court. the former neighborhood worldwatch leader has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder charges in the shooting death of the 17-year-old last february. coming up, it will be the biggest change for the bay area skyline in years. in fact, it will dominate downtown san francisco. how the next big thing measures up to the pyramids. live from the city of san francisco, where obviously the weather has taken a turn. it's cooled off. and now when the rain will arrive when you should expect it as eyewitness news continues right here on cbs 5. card hassles?

tower received final approvl yesterday. plans north downtown san francisco transbay terminal tower received final approval yesterday. the building which will stand at first and mission streets will be the city's tallest at 1,070 feet high, more than 200 feet taller than the transamerica building. some of groups have complained about the shadows on public spaces and parks cast by the building. >> if that was up now it would be shrouded in clouds because

it's kind of pewy out there right now. >> roberta? >> we are at the embarcadero. i have to tell you something right now. first off, yeah, we have gray clouds behind me here as we look at the bay bridge but obviously i am wearing white. i know it's a fashion faux pas. women, we don't wear white after labor day. but there's a reason to my madness. we'll get to that. but right now it's your weekend and we have a changing forecast. so let's get right to it. first off we'll begin with current temperatures. it's obviously much cooler than yesterday at this hour. 64 degrees apiece in oakland and san francisco. it's currently in the upper 60s in downtown san jose with the sunshine. livermore full sun at 74. and santa rosa 70 with not much of a breeze. 66 degrees in concord. what you need to know as far as your day is concerned your weather headlines suggest only partial afternoon clearing around the central bay and obviously, not as warm by a good 20 degrees in some neighborhoods. we will experience the low clouds rolling back onshore all the way inland over night

tonight and anticipate localized drizzle. it's misty outside right now. a cooler weekend is slated for everybody and then we do have the rain returning by the beginning of next week. high pressure is a key component bringing us record warmth over the past couple of days. now it's giving way to to a trough dropping down over the state of california. sacramento in the low 80s with sunshine. tahoe sunny skies but snow monday night down to 7,000 feet. yosemite in the 80s. monterey bay drizzle in the upper 60s. upper 70s in san jose today. pretty much 60s and 70s across the plains to the low 80s in livermore. your seven-day forecast does suggest that we have temperatures up to the low 80s.

mid-70s by tomorrow. sunday will be the coolest day of the weekend. and then monday, the rain should arrive by the morning commute. and then showers continue tuesday and on wednesday. big doings going on over the weekend. it is the big game. we have cal against stanford. expect the low 70s with an abundance of sunshine at the brand-new memorial stadium. >> another event got to tell you about it, this is the reason i'm wear white, it's call le diner in blanc. have you heard about this? thousands of people they go to a pop-up picnic. this is a secret part. we have no idea where it's at. they will inform us about 3:30. then we jumping in the mobile van heading to the picnic where everybody will be picnicking in white. thousands of people. they say the whole reason is because san francisco is such a beautiful city outdoor city fine dining, great food, and great friends. and new friends and everybody come together and just breaks
